Kefalonia's local cuisine is very fertile due to the rainfalls and produces a big variety of agricultural products which are included in the Kefalonian diet: olives, olive oil, wine, fruits, vegetables, feta cheese.

Kefalonian diet is similar to other Ionian islands' diet, with certain variants that include local recipes and local tasty dishes.

The cuisine of Kefalonia includes all ingredients of the Mediterranean and Ionian cuisine: meat, fishes, fruits, vegetables.

The most popular dishes of the island, that you should try, are presented below :

Dishes Feta cheese: The famous Greek cheese made by goat's and ewe's milk. Kefalonian pies are really delicious and are the trademark of the island. The pies are prepared with home made crust and filling of rice, meat, leek and spinach, vegetables, cod and octopus.

Bourbourelia: A kind of soup made by beans, salt, pepper and olive oil.

Aliada: Local dish consisting of boiled octopus, garlic and mashed potatoes.

Strapatsada: Eggs with tomatoes, fried in olive oil, salt and pepper.

Riganada: Bread slices, grilled or not, accompanied with olive oil and oregano.

Sweets Galaktompoureko: One of the tastiest sweets in Greece and in Kefalonia. It is made by home made crust and custard filling, including eggs, sugar and milk.

Mantoles: Famous sweet snack in Ionian Islands, made by almonds and sugar. You can find it everywhere and you can buy it packed or by the kilo.

Pasteli: Caramelized sweet snack with sesame and excellent local honey.

Amigdalopita: Almond pie.

Wines Robola: The most famous wine in Kefalonia, white and dry.

Mavrodafn: Red, thick and sweet wine.

Muscat: White and sweet wine.
